Dining Room Converted to an Office

Many of us work from home and if you have room in your kitchen for a dining table, your dining room could work well as a flex space for a home office. Dining rooms are often underused and especially if you live in a small home or apartment every inch is useful.
In my current house I have a dining room space off of the living room next to the eat in kitchen. It was easy to fit a dining room table in the breakfast area so I could convert the dining room to a home office space. I hope photos of my space give you design ideas for your home!

The first thing I added to the space was a large landscape tapestry from Anthropologie. Big wall decor adds a lot of character to a room, and that is especially useful when you rent and can’t change the wall color.
I brought in a previously purchased Lubi daybed from CB2 and centered it under the tapestry. I currently do not have a guest room, so this space also works for overnight guests.

The desk was purchased locally from Nadeau and my leather office chair is from World Market. Desk lamp was purchased from Home Goods, vintage floral artwork from Restore.

While unpacking boxes it became quickly apparent I would need bookcases for my design books and material samples. I found some reasonably priced solid wood bookcases that fit under the wired wall sconces.
The bookcase color is definitely different than the online photos, but they worked for my needs. I purchased mine from Walmart but the pine bookcases are also available on Amazon if would like to compare prices.

A few months ago I quizzed my Instagram followers on my new animal print area rug and the verdict was divided. But the rug pattern makes me smile and it was small budget friendly (around $100 on Wayfair). My dog Winston loves to sit on the rug like it is his giant dog bed. Usually his dog toys are out, too.

Design Tip: If you are interested in making a home office in a dining room, utilize every corner and as much wall space as possible. I have a file cabinet and printer in the corner near the breakfast area.

A formal dining room in your home can easily be turned into an office space. A dining room can also be used as a space dedicated to play, crafts, or a guest bedroom (especially if there are doors for privacy).
How do you use your dining room?

Hi Julia,
